DISCOVERY ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST FREE-TO-AIR PARTNERSHIP IN SOUTHEAST ASIA ON THAILAND’S PPTV

Singapore, January 16, 2018 – Discovery Networks Asia Pacific today announced the launch of ‘Discovery Hour’ on Thailand’s digital terrestrial channel PPTV HD 36, marking a play in the terrestrial space with its first free-to-air block in Southeast Asia. The partnership was announced at a press conference in Bangkok this afternoon.

Starting February 1 from 8:00-9:00 AM daily, viewers in Thailand will be able to enjoy some of Discovery’s most exciting programmes on Discovery Hour. The block will feature content from five of the network’s most popular genres: Survival, Extreme Jobs, Pop Science, Motoring, and Science. Titles include Ed Stafford: Into the Unknown, You Have Been Warned, Venom Hunters, Diesel Brothers, How We Invented the World, and local production Worst Vacation Ever.

“We are really excited to launch our first free-to-air block in Southeast Asia with PPTV to bring our shows to even more viewers in Thailand. We have a huge library of content and we are looking forward to entertaining new audiences who have never experienced the Discovery brand before. At the same time, this also creates an even bigger appetite for our shows that are already airing in the market,” said Shavkat Berdiev, Vice President and General Manager of Southeast Asia, Discovery Networks Asia Pacific.

Commenting on the launch, Surin Krittayaphongphun, President of Bangkok Media & Broadcasting Co. Ltd., said, “We must focus on acquiring quality shows in order to stay in the game. Our aim is to enable the greater public audience to access international quality content, better yet in high definition quality. Therefore, you’ll see that the programme lineup on PPTV this year will consist of a good mix of premium content, many of which are from the world’s top content providers,” said Mr. Surin.

The partnership underscores Discovery’s commitment to providing audiences with high-quality entertainment, while capitalizing on opportunities to grow the business in an extremely competitive and rapidly evolving industry. Discovery has also been stepping up its focus on localization to bring its viewers more engaging, relevant content that fuels their curiosity.
