Landmark Piracy Settlement in the Philippines

Tuesday, 30 November 1999

A Philippine provincial cable operator and CASBAA have agreed a settlement of cable piracy complaints brought by CASBAA on behalf of its member companies. Turtle Cable Co., in Camarines Sur province, agreed to "go legit," pay compensation and sign a public apology statement. CASBAA, in turn, withdrew complaints against Turtle Cable before the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) of the Philippines that had already resulted in a Restraining Order being issued, and could have led to withdrawal of the cable company's operating license. The settlement will be officially confirmed soon by the IPO, a hopeful end to this, the pay-TV industry's first use of that agency’s judicial processes. Read the soon-to be published public apology here.
