Cloud TV - TV to Phone

You are watching a TV show but just when the gripping finale is 10 minutes away, you have to leave home to run an errand.

But a system - invented by a Nanyang Technological University (NTU) researcher - could let you continue enjoying that show while on the move.

The prototype, Social Cloud TV, was developed by the School of Computer Engineering's Assistant Professor Wen Yonggang, 35.

The technology is being considered by a major local pay-TV operator for roll-out, which could be in one to two years, said the China-born don. He worked in the US as a researcher at a global networking firm before joining NTU 18 months ago.

The concept, commonly called multi-screening, is gaining prominence as pay-TV operators try to stay relevant in an era where consumers are constantly plugged into PCs, tablets or smartphones.

Specially created apps have to be downloaded on TV sets, PCs, tablets and smartphones. These apps allow users to transfer Facebook and Google Talk contacts for chatting and content sharing.

Users grab movies and live chats from TV by aiming the mobile device's camera at the set and selecting the desired content from a menu on the mobile screen. The transfer is complete when users flick their tablet or smartphone away from the TV set.
