HK prepares for digital switchover

Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) has started test broadcasts in Hong Kong on digital TV services, as the special administrative region (SAR) of China edges closer to an analogue switchover (ASO) by end-2015.

Chan Man-kuen, the controller (TV) of RTHK, officially launched the testing from the Temple Hill transmission station on July 1 this year, marking a milestone in the development of digital terrestrial TV (DTT) service by RTHK.

RTHK is a public broadcasting organisation that is operated as an independent department under the Hong Kong Broadcasting Authority, with the launch of DTT broadcasting service among its development initiatives.

RTHK operates seven radio channels and produces TV programmes that are then broadcast through local TV stations in the territory.

According to Chan, about 50% of TV households in Hong Kong should be able to receive broadcast signals from one HD and two SD programme channels transmitted by the Temple Hill station.
