Second screening is taking off in Australia

Aussies are watching more than 100 hours of TV a month and are beginning to embrace the second screen, according to a new report.

The latest quarterly Australian Multi-Screen Report reveals that 60% of online Australians use their TV screens and computer screens simultaneously, and 45% of Australians regularly watch video content online.

While 95% of all TV viewing is through a traditional TV set, 5% of the online population say they watch content on a tablet – up from 2% two years ago.

The report, by Nielsen, OzTAM and Regional TAM, also reveals that 52% of Aussies over the age of 16 own a smartphone (up from 46% in the second quarter of 2012), 19% of homes have a tablet (up from 15%) and 78% of homes have the internet.

Doug Peiffer, chief executive of OzTam, said: “Australians love television and are increasingly using new devices to stay in touch with their favourite programs and enjoy video whenever and wherever they wish.

“The latest Multi-Screen Report draws on the expert research of OzTAM, Regional TAM and Nielsen to illustrate how, when and the extent to which consumers use these new devices to provide greater insight to media owners, producers and advertisers.”
