Australia Internet TV enters the mainstream

Watching TV online is becoming mainstream in Australia, with 5.2 million Aussies using the internet to catch up with TV shows and watch professional content.

The statistics are revealed in a new report by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). Watching catch-up TV, such as through the ABC’s iview, is the dominant use of online video, with recent episodes of TV shows being the most popular content.

The ACMA’s survey also found that most people are willing to pay for online video – 2.8 million Aussies said they were happy to pay for access.

Following full-length TV shows, films are the second most popular content accessed online, with 32% of those who watch online content watching movies.

A statement from the ACMA said: “Adoption of these services has been encouraged by factors such as the increasing amount of program content made available online, faster internet speeds and more affordable data costs.

“Australia’s free-to-air broadcasters are leading the charge to online viewing, providing the opportunity for audiences to catch up on recently aired television programs at the click of a mouse, mostly free of additional access charges.”

IPTV, however, is less popular, with only 5% of internet-connected homes using the internet TV services. In June, 38% of internet users were aware of IPTV services, compared to 51% aware of catch-up TV.

The statement added: “Take-up of IPTV may be deterred by low awareness, interest in these services, and lack of time or cost.”
