Cable channels lead Disney profits

(May 8, 2013) Profits jumped at Walt Disney as its cable networks turned in a strong performance.
 Second-quarter net income rose 32 per cent to $1.5 billion, from $1.1 billion a year ago. Revenues rose 10 per cent to $1.06 billion.

Time Warner Cable, Hearst, HBO and Verizon are helping to fund the fledgling NYC Media Lab as part of a media-industry effort to encourage and benefit from research in the same way that tech companies already do.

BBC Names New Editorial Director

(May 8, 2013) Roger Mosey has been announced as the editorial director for the BBC, working across TV, radio and news.

Reporting to director-general Tony Hall, Mosey will be overseeing the BBC’s editorial standards and the planning of pan-BBC events. He will take the lead on handling all major editorial issues as they come up. Mosey will be working alongside the divisional directors of Television, Radio and News. In the new role, he also joins the BBC’s management board. Mosey was previously the BBC’s director for London 2012, later becoming the acting director of BBC Vision.

ITV Goes for More of The Bletchley Circle

(May 8, 2013) ITV has ordered a four-episode second season of The Bletchley Circle, a code-breaking thriller, which is adding Hattie Morahan to the cast.

Steve November, ITV’s director of drama commissioning, commented: “The Bletchley Circle is a wonderful addition to our drama slate last year and we’re delighted that it’s returning to ITV with two new and exciting stories.”

Venevision & SET Partner for Miss Venezuela Reality Series

(May 8, 2013) Venevision and Sony Entertainment Television have agreed to co-produce Miss Venezuela, All for the Crown, a new reality show chronicling the weeks leading up to the popular beauty pageant.

Miss Venezuela, All for the Crown (Miss Venezuela, Todo Por La Corona) will document the experiences of the candidates as they prepare for the competition. It will feature three stages: The Casting (El Casting), From Candidates to Misses (De Aspirantes a Misses) and Quest for the Crown (Camino a la Corona). Numerous advertisers have already signed up, including Procter & Gamble and Coca-Cola, among many others.
