Thailand: NBTC approves HD licences

2/10/2012: The broadcasting committee of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) yesterday approved a digital plan to grant four licences for commercial high-definition (HD) channels next March.

Committee chairman Col Natee Sukonrat said the panel also agreed to issue 20 licences for commercial standard-definition channels.

Under the master plan governing digital broadcasting, the NBTC will issue 12 licences for public channels by year-end and another 12 for community purposes next year.

The committee previously approved the 2012-16 draft roadmap taking the broadcast industry into the digital era.

There are 60 digital terrestrial TV channels divided into three groups: 36 channels for commercial TV and 12 each for public and community service.

US sat loan for Viets

October 05, 2012: The US is lending $118 million in order for Vietnam to fund an extra communications satellite. The satellite, Vinasat-2, is already in orbit, having been launched in May.  The cash is coming from The Export-Import Bank of the US, and will go to satellite builder Lockheed Martin Space Systems.

The craft is being operated by state-owned Vietnam’s Post & Telecommunications Group (VNPT), and they are looking to use the new satellite to cope with growing demand from telecommunications and TV broadcasters.

Viet ops demand slowdown in telco/cable push

October 2,2012: HANOI – Vietnam Television (VTV) and the Vietnam Pay Television Association (VNPayTV) have petitioned relevant authorities not to grant business licenses to telecom firms to join the local cable television industry.

The move came after Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), Viettel and FPT Corporation announced plans to join the cable television sector.

VTV and VNPayTV said in the petition that investment of the three groups into the industry is out of their core business areas. They said that if relevant authorities issue licenses to the new members, it is just a waste of public money.

However, certain officials and experts disagree with the television association’s stance.

Pham Hong Hai, head of the Telecom Agency under the Ministry of Information and Communications, said that if the three telecom companies make investment in the cable television sector, it is still not non-core investment. Based on their technical infrastructure available at home, the more services enterprises in the cable television industry offer, the better the industry will be, he said.

Fast-food limits for Taiwan?

Oct 03, 2012: Legislators yesterday urged the government to restrict the broadcast of junk food commercials on children’s TV channels, as well as at hours when children’s programs are aired on other channels.

A study by the Child Welfare League Foundation showed that children in Taiwan are exposed to an average of 8,325 junk-food commercials a year. On average, each child sees a junk-food ad every 6.6 minutes when watching TV.

The frequency of junk-food ads increases during times when meals are usually eaten — 1.6 the number of times they are aired during other hours.

STAR Chinese Movies 2 evolves into SCM Legend

fox123
Rebranded Channel Offers Viewers Access to the All-time Hits that
Defined Hong Kong Cinema from the ‘70s to ‘90s

Singapore, 4th October 2012 – Hot on the heels of the recently re-launched sister channel, STAR Chinese Movies (SCM) in early July, STAR Chinese Movies 2 has also undergone a transformation to become SCM Legend as of 1st October 2012. The channel currently boasts access to the world’s largest contemporary Chinese film library of over 700 Chinese films, including titles from Golden Harvest, Golden Princess, D&B, China Star and other key studios.

SCM Legend will continue to provide viewers with a varied selection of classic Hong Kong films, providing an opportunity to re-experience the golden era of Hong Kong cinema. The channel will also initiate a series of movie marathon programming, screening films of specific genres over a limited period. The first of the movie marathons, Legendary Combat, will begin on 6th October, featuring the martial arts action movies that dominated the Hong Kong cinema from the ‘70s to ‘90s.

The logo of the new channel aligns with that of its sister channel, taking the shape of a royal crown to signify SCM’s positioning as the emperor of Chinese entertainment content. When the name of the rebranded channel is pronounced in Chinese, it plays on the homonym of ‘classic’ and ‘cassette tape’, both of which symbolize the movie content featured on the channel ─ screening classic movies from the ‘70s to ‘90s ─ the era when cassette tapes were highly prevalent.

“We’re thrilled to bring life to some of Hong Kong’s proudest cinematic achievements through SCM Legend,” said Cora Yim, Vice President Programming, SCM. “Through this platform, younger audiences can enjoy these movie classics, which contribute to the very fabric of the Hong Kong entertainment industry.”

Catch-up on the Defining Martial Arts Classics

The Legendary Combat movie marathon will offer younger viewers the opportunity to view some of Hong Kong’s must-see martial arts films. The Legendary Combat series will air every Saturday and Sunday in October, kicking off from 6th October at 10 pm. The marathon will feature timeless martial arts classics such as Bruce Lee’s Way of the Dragon and Fist of Fury; Jet Li and Director Tsui Hark’s Once Upon a Time in China series; and Jackie Chan’s all-time hits such as Police Story, Armour of God 1 & 2 and Project A

Brightcove confident that Pay TV can harness cloud transcoding

bc123
October 3, 2012 – An emerging but important subject for 2013 is likely to be cloud transcoding, which gives content providers or even platform operators the option to transfer video to a third-party that acts as a SaaS (Software as a Service) provider, rather than performing all or even any transcoding on their own premises. One of the companies hoping to convince the Pay TV market that this is a serious proposition is Brightcove, whose Chief Marketing Officer Jeff Whatcott believes cloud transcoding has an important role in reducing the pain associated with making more content available in more formats for multiscreen devices.
