AXN Dramas CSI and Leverage Perform Ahead of the Competition

spt_logo_123
Singapore, 25 September, 2012 – Sony Pictures Television Networks, Asia’s flagship channel AXN has seen the latest seasons of its key dramas including the crime procedural franchise CSI and heist series Leverage top ratings across Asia.

As Asia’s home of the CSI franchise, AXN offers the latest seasons of all three series first and exclusively. Since 1 January 2011, the franchise has delivered a collective reach of 60 million viewers across Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and India. Most recently, the premiere of the 10th season of CSI: Miami in August was the No.1 rated show for pay-TV 4+ audiences and professionals, managers, executives and businessmen (PMEB) audiences in its timeslot, with a 137 per cent lead and four times the ratings of the closest advertising supported network respectively.

Another AXN favourite, Leverage starring Timothy Hutton, has seen strong viewership across Southeast Asia. The drama series, now in its fourth season, claimed the No.1 spot in its timeslot, over all advertising supported channels for pay-TV audiences in Singapore, Malaysia, and Philippines for its premiere broadcast from July – September 2012.

“The enduring popularity of the CSI franchise is phenomenal and its stellar ratings reaffirm AXN’s leadership position, offering the best TV crime procedurals. Leverage’s steady following over four seasons make it another top draw drama. In the months ahead, we are expecting even bigger things as AXN continues to roll out a whole new slate of thrilling programming including The Voice Season 3 which broadcasts within days of the US telecast and the highly anticipated action series Last Resort,” said Ricky Ow, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Networks, Sony Pictures Television.

CSI: New York Season 8 which debuted in May also topped its timeslot for pay-TV 4+ viewers, delivering 2.2 and 4.2 times the ratings of the next best rated advertising supported network in its timeslot, also among pay-TV 4+ audiences, and PMEB audiences respectively.

In its 12th season that bowed in April, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, drew over 94 per cent higher ratings and 2.2 times the ratings of the nearest competing advertising supported network in its timeslot among pay-TV 4+ audiences, and PMEB audiences respectively.

Eutelsat Communications Concludes Acquisition of GE-23 Expanding footprint to high growth Asia-Pacific markets

Paris, 25 September, 2012 – Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris: ETL), one of the world’s leading satellite operators, today announced closure of the transaction to acquire the GE-23 satellite, associated customer contracts and orbital rights from GE Capital, having obtained all required regulatory approvals.

The satellite, renamed EUTELSAT 172A, is now part of Eutelsat’s fleet, with technical and commercial teams working to ensure a smooth transition for existing customers.

Commenting on the acquisition, Michel de Rosen, CEO of Eutelsat Communications, said, “We are delighted to announce finalisation of this acquisition that brings three key assets to Eutelsat: first, a high-quality satellite equipped with a flexible payload of C and Ku-band capacity in great demand over the Asia-Pacific region. Secondly, the transaction includes orbital rights at 172° East, giving us an exceptional platform to serve dynamic markets in the region as well as headroom for further expansion. Thirdly, we are acquiring a portfolio of quality customer relationships that we are excited to serve. This satellite adds further ballast to Eutelsat’s organic growth initiatives, notably our EUTELSAT 70B satellite which is equipped with a dedicated Asian beam and on track for launch later this year.”

Built by Thales Alenia Space, the satellite was launched in December 2005 with expected performance for 15 years. From geostationary orbit at 172° East, it offers unique coverage over the Asia-Pacific region via a payload of 20 Ku-band transponders accessing five interconnecting beams and 18 C-band transponders connected to a trans-Pacific beam. Leveraging its comprehensive coverage and high-bandwidth capability, EUTELSAT 172A already offers a broad range of telecom services to a diverse base of blue chip customers.

FOX channels laud Taiwan’s digital TV market potential

fox123
Taipei, Sept. 25 (CNA) Taiwan’s digital market potential and market transparency provide an ideal environment for foreign TV channel operators, Fox International Channels (FIC) executives said Tuesday. “Cable TV here evolved faster than it did in a lot of other places,” but the actual content and channels are not much different than they were a decade ago, said Ward Platt, president of FIC’s Asia Pacific and Middle East branch. The situation has motivated the network to seek what it described as “quality productions” in Taiwan and to describe the lack of change in TV content as offering potential for the development of digital TV services here, FIC said.

Like Asia, USA grapples with OTT regulation

Internet TV Rules May Need an Overhaul

24.09.2012 – Questions about the wisdom of extending the rules that govern broadcasters and cable and satellite operators to Internet TV services, or, alternatively, rolling back regulations on traditional providers to level the playing field, figure to loom large in the next session of Congress.

A panel discussion among media experts convened by the nonprofit Advisory Committee to the Congressional Internet Caucus, designed as a briefing for Hill staffers, offered a preview of the coming debate.

“The nature of this problem is that we have a classic sort of asymmetrical regulation problem, or an unlevel playing field problem, that’s developing in this country because we have very heavily regulated markets converging with very unregulated markets, and very disruptive ones at that,” says Adam Thierer, a senior research fellow at George Mason University’s Mercatus Center.
