Macau: AL committee approves copyright bill

February 22, 2012 – A Legislative Assembly (AL) committee gave its consent to the controversial copyrights bill revision, but stressed that the bill aimed to protect copyrights instead of targeting public antenna companies or favouring Cable TV, which welcomed the new bill yesterday.
The third standing committee of AL gave the green light for the much-debated bill, paving the way for approval by the AL general assembly. Committee president Cheang Chi Keong, however, stressed that the new bill did not, as many people suggested, target the local public antenna companies that are relaying copyright-protected TV programs, nor did it favor Cable TV, which has been the territory’s only legal concessionaire of cable television services since 1999. Cable TV has been repeatedly accusing public antenna companies of competition by illegal means.

Hong Kong Experiences the Power of Multichannel TV

Hong Kong, 22 February 2012 – Seven of the biggest regional multichannel television networks presented their upcoming programming to more than 60 media buyers, agency heads and clients during TV Upfronts – The Hong Kong Screenings.

The screenings staged on February 21, promoted in association with Campaign Asia-Pacific, built on the success of the inaugural Upfronts held in Singapore last December to promote the power of advertising on multichannel TV across Asia.

“Multichannel TV is a powerful medium to maximize ROI for marketers,” said Marcel Fenez, Chairman of CASBAA. “While the numbers from our recent research show that costs can be lowered and reach increased by advertising on multichannel TV, these screenings truly showcase why this medium is so popular – because of the diversity of content available to viewers in Asia.”

Participants in the showcase included AETN All Asia Networks, Bloomberg, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, FOX One Stop Media, NBCUniversal, SPE Networks-Asia and Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific who unveiled new programming illustrating the appeal of multichannel TV to targeted markets and a range of demographics. Agency participants included Carat, GroupM Regional, MediaCom, Mindshare, MPG, MEC, OMD, Maxus, PHD and UM.

Guest speaker Sean Rach, Director, Regional Marketing, Prudential Corporation Asia, presented a case study on the benefits of using multichannel TV to help parents in Asia build money-smart values for children aged seven to 12.

“Multichannel TV can no longer be perceived as a niche platform for advertisers anymore, with penetration surpassing 50% of TV homes across Asia,” added Fenez. “CASBAA will further promote the power of multichannel TV across Asia with additional TV Upfronts across the region later this year.”

YouTube enlists big-name help to redefine channels

February 21, 2012 – YouTube is enlisting Hollywood’s help to reach a generation of viewers more familiar with smartphones than TV remotes.

The online video giant is aiming to create 25 hours of programming per day with the help of some of the top names in traditional TV. The Google-owned site is spreading its wealth among producers, directors, and other filmmakers, using a $100 million pot of seed money it committed last fall. The fund represents YouTube’s largest spending on original content so far.

YouTube believes it is laying groundwork for the future. While the number of traditional TV watchers has leveled off in recent years, more and more people are watching video on mobile phones, tablets and computers, especially the 18- to 34-year-old age demographic that advertisers covet.

Eutelsat and ViaSat innovation in new-generation broadband satellites awarded by the Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI)
Transformational KA-SAT and ViaSat-1 satellites represent outstanding contribution to satellite communications

Paris, Carlsbad, Calif., February 17, 2012 – The Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) today announced that they have bestowed Industry Innovators Awards on Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris: ETL) and ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT) in recognition of the development and launch of their High Throughput Satellites, KA-SAT and ViaSat-1.

Both companies are transforming the landscape for satellite broadband and are delivering a broadband experience matching terrestrial services through KA-SAT and ViaSat-1.

The SSPI Awards recognise outstanding new contributions to the field of satellite communications by private and public sector organizations. Honorees are chosen by a committee of industry experts for accomplishments ranging across a broad spectrum of advanced satellite technology and business applications. The Awards will be presented on March 12 during the Satellite 2012 conference in Washington DC.

In a joint statement, Michel de Rosen, CEO of Eutelsat and Mark Dankberg, CEO of ViaSat said: “It is an honour for our efforts to be rewarded by the SSPI and encourages both our organizations to pursue our vision to deliver high quality broadband services to the millions of consumers lacking high speed broadband. The innovative services offered today on KA-SAT and ViaSat-1 are just the beginning of this transformation of satellite.”

KA-SAT

Launched in December 2010 and in service since May 2011, Eutelsat’s KA-SAT satellite marked the long-awaited arrival of faster Internet for users in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin beyond range of terrestrial networks. The satellite delivers throughput of over 70 Gbps with high frequency reuse achieved via 82 spotbeams. KA-SAT powers the Tooway™ broadband service, the first to implement ViaSat’s high-capacity technology, to provide speeds of up to 10 Mbps download and 4 Mbps upload, making it the fastest satellite broadband service within its footprint and comparable to ADSL. Speeds of up to 50 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload address professional markets. With 30 million homes in KA-SAT’s coverage still unserved or underserved by ADSL, KA-SAT is on the way to making a significant contribution to meeting pent-up broadband demand from consumer and enterprise markets.

ViaSat-1

October 2011 saw the launch of ViaSat-1, the world’s highest capacity satellite, offering 140 Gbps of total throughput over the USA and Canada. In January 2012 ViaSat launched its ViaSat-1 based ExedeSM high-speed Internet service, offering speeds up to 12 Mbps downstream and up to 3 Mbps upstream. In addition to residential service, the new ViaSat high-capacity satellite system is designed to simultaneously deliver a wide range of enterprise and mobile broadband services. Professional customers can choose from a family of terminals for enterprise, on-the-move, and portable applications. ViaSat is also working with JetBlue to create the industry’s best in-flight broadband for commercial aviation, with a planned service launch by the end of 2012.
