10 September, 2015 AMSTERDAM – Telstra today announced the rebrand of recently acquired business, Globecast Australia, to Telstra Broadcast Services, unveiling the new brand at the International Broadcasting Conference (IBC) in Amsterdam.

The move cements Telstra’s commitment to providing deeper capabilities in media services for customers in the broadcasting industry. Telstra Broadcast Services offers its global customer base media delivery over Satellite platforms, including direct to home Satellite transmission and IPTV managed services; IP streaming and encoding; Satellite monitoring and disaster recovery. It has also developed live point-of-view miniature camera technology which is used extensively at sporting events through its Globecam business.

ABS electric satellite arrives early

Satellites are increasingly being built with electric thrusters in order to save the large amounts of propellant needed to get to orbit. The downside is that the satellite then takes months instead of weeks to get to its final orbit. The satellite is thus less heavy at launch, and is less-expensive.

NBCUniversal licenses movies for Alibaba’s VoD service

Alibaba Group and NBCUniversal International have sealed a multi-year content agreement. NBCUniversal has licensed a slate of movie titles from Universal Pictures for Alibaba’s video-on-demand service, TMall Box Office.

“This partnership will continue to increase our reach in the market, as well as driving additional revenues for us in Asia. NBCUniversal is committed to licensing high-quality programming to Chinese platforms in order to provide great entertainment experiences to the Chinese audience,” said Kevin MacLellan, Chairman of NBCUniversal International.

Sony Six to broadcast Mayweather Jr Vs Andre Berto fight

Sony Six, the sportscaster from Multi-Screen Media, will air the Floyd Mayweather Jr. against WBA welterweight interim champion, Andre Berto. The match will be aired live on 13 September at 5:30 am IST.

The sports channel has partnered with Fight Sports for the match, which will be available exclusively to subscribers of Sony Six and Sony Six HD.

Viacom to launch mobile TV apps

Viacom International has introduced Viacom Play Plex, which is a suite of mobile TV apps that will enable its distributors deliver Viacom content to smartphone and tablet users.

The media company said that the apps will be available in all the 180 countries in which it has TV channels, including India. According to media reports, the Viacom Play Plex will have a separate app for each of the media conglomerate’s International TV channels, such as Comedy Central, MTV Nickelodeon among others.

The mobile TV Apps will also let users watch live TV on their smart-devices as well as access games of Nick Play. Viacom is reportedly launching the apps by Q4 of 2015 and is looking for distribution partners, including network operators for the OTT platform.

ABS-3A Satellite Enters Commercial Service

Bermuda, 10th September 2015 – The revolutionary ABS-3A satellite is now in full commercial use. The satellite started service on 31st August 2015 to serve the Americas, Africa, Europe and the Middle East regions.

Launched on 1st March 2015, the ABS-3A satellite built by Boeing has performed even better than expected having arrived ahead of schedule. In-Orbit tests have been successfully completed and the satellite became fully operational on 31st August 2015.
ABS-3A features 48 C and Ku-band active transponders (96 x 36 MHz equivalent) and is equipped with high performance beams to support the rapidly growing markets in the Americas and Africa as well as the European and Middle East regions. ABS-3A provides expansion capacity to reach markets servicing high-growth data, video, mobility and government applications.

StarHub fends off pay TV contenders with tried-and-tested Hubbing strategy

New services by ViewQwest won’t dent its market share.

StarHub will continue to lead Singapore’s pay TV market despite internet service provider ViewQwest’s recent foray into the pay TV space.

According to BMI Research, the new product is unlikely to affect StarHub’s pay TV market share because 60% of the telco’s customers subscribe to at least two services under the so-called Hubbing strategy.
