Mobile TV smartphone streamers to reach 240m

May 8, 2012 – A new report from Juniper Research suggests that the number of streamed mobile TV users on smartphones will increase to 240 million by 2014. This increase will be driven by a rise in smartphone penetration and a growth in the usage of Internet TV and IPTV services.

The report found that the substantial growth in streamed mobile TV users would arise from a combination of both increased smartphone penetration and, critically, an increasing usage of live and on-demand services both on TVs and PCs. Juniper Research notes that these catch-up and live Internet TV services are already allowing users to become their own programme schedulers – mobile allows consumers to take this content away from the home by ‘placeshifting’ it and adding a new dimension to the TV experience.

Al Jazeera China bureau closes

al-jazeera123
May 8, 2012 – In the latest of its rows over censorship by what it believes are authoritarian regimes, Al Jazeera English is to close its China bureau after authorities refused to renew its correspondent’s press credentials and visa or allow a replacement journalist.

Melissa Chan had been Al Jazeera English’s China correspondent since 2007, filing nearly 400 reports during her five years in the country, covering stories about the rapidly growing economy, domestic politics, foreign policy and the environment, but also, and probably crucially, the controversial and very sensitive topics of social justice, labour rights and human rights.

The new channel, which has famously been censored and even banned by various middle East regimes such as Syria, had been requesting additional visas for correspondents for some time through normal procedures, but these were not issued.

More than half U.S. HHs want to connect pay-TV via YouTube

DALLAS (May 4, 2012): The international research firm Parks Associates reports that 59 percent of U.S. broadband households want access to on-demand YouTube content through their pay-TV service.

The firm finds that more than 80 percent of viewers interested in YouTube go for the free, ad-based offering. This means that few are willing to actually pay to watch YouTube content. Is ‘TV Everywhere’ liberating or coercive?

May 2, 2012 – The mainstream media has been abuzz this week with word that Hulu is exploring authenticated “TV Everywhere” deals with pay-TV operators — apparently unaware that Fox, one of Hulu’s owners, started doing this with its first-run primetime shows last summer.

In July 2011, Fox announced it would begin withholding new episodes of popular shows like House, Glee and The Simpsons for eight days from the free-to-all sections of Hulu.com and Fox.com.

See the little tiny locks on the Fox website for full episodes?

Currently, those episodes are available day-after-air only to Hulu Plus subscribers and customers of participating pay-TV providers. Dish was the first in Fox’s TV Everywhere roster, and Verizon FiOS has joined as well (see Fox Urges Pay-TV Subs To Agitate For ‘TV Everywhere’ Access and Fox To Stash New Online Episodes Behind Walled Garden).

News Corp. chief digital officer Jon Miller, speaking at CES in January, stressed the importance of the TV Everywhere model for both Fox and Hulu, B&C’s George Winslow reported.
