Eutelsat unveils High Dynamic Range Ultra HD channel

Amsterdam, Paris, 8 September 2016 – Eutelsat Communications (NYSE Euronext Paris: ETL) announces the launch from the HOTBIRD video neighbourhood of an Ultra HD channel showing HDR (High Dynamic Range) content using HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) technology, the new HDR standard developed by the BBC and NHK. Eutelsat has teamed up with 4EVER-2, the French collaborative project on Ultra HD, ATEME and Samsung to show the spectacular appeal of HDR Ultra HD at IBC.

Brighter brights, deeper shadows, more saturated colours

High Dynamic Range (HDR) television creates richer and more dynamic images by increasing the contrast ratio between the lightest and darkest areas of the screen and increasing the volume of colours a screen can display. The result is a picture that is rich in detail, with colours that surge from the screen, generating a strong feeling of realism.

Visitors to Eutelsat’s booth at IBC will be invited to watch Ultra HD images encoded using HLG, with HEVC encoding by ATEME. HLG, that was recently adopted by the ITU as an international standard uses a single distribution bitstream which can be decoded by HDR receivers and also by legacy Standard Dynamic (SDR) displays, providing broadcasters with a way to accelerate time-to-market of their Ultra HD content.

Called “HOTBIRD 4k2 HDR”, the new channel is broadcasting across Europe from Eutelsat’s flagship HOTBIRD neighbourhood. It is showing sports, cultural and wildlife content from the 4EVER-2 consortium, dBW Communication, The Explorers Network and RAICom. The channel is broadcast at 50 frames per second, with 10 bits of colour depth (one billion colours) in the BT2020 environment. Content will be shown on Samsung’s newest Quantum dot SUHD TV that is capable of producing up to one billion colours and offering more than 1000-nit brightness.

Elevating Ultra HD to new heights

Michel Chabrol, Eutelsat’s Senior Vice President New TV Formats, said: “This new channel will benefit players in the broadcasting chain who are seeking to acquire expertise in HDR Ultra HD broadcasts. Since Ultra HD blazed a trail three years ago Eutelsat’s strategy has been to support our customers as they embrace the race to the highest image quality. HDR is the newest step in this adventure and one that gives new meaning to the industry ambition to deliver a spectacular and immersive viewing experience.”

How to watch HOTBIRD 4k2 HDR:

HOTBIRD (13° East)
Frequency: 12015 MHz
Horizontal polarization
Symbol rate: 30000
DVB-S2, 8PSK, FEC 5/6
HEVC encoding at 30 Mbit/s

Where to meet Eutelsat at IBC, from September 9 to 13: Hall 1D.59

Paris, 8 September 2016 – TricolorTV, Russia’s fastest growing pay-TV platform, with 12 million subscribers, has officially launched its new broadband service using the High Throughput Ka-band capacity on the EUTELSAT 36C satellite commercialised by Eutelsat Communications (NYSE Euronext Paris: ETL). The new service offers consumer and professional subscribers Internet access with speeds of up to 40 Mbps downstream and 12 Mbps upstream, with a range of tariffs tailored to end-user requirements.

Launched in December 2015, the EUTELSAT 36C satellite features high-power capacity for TV broadcasting in European parts of the Russian Federation and a High Throughput payload comprising 18 Ka-band beams delivering continuous coverage of Western Russia, from the Arctic coastline to the Caspian Sea. Eutelsat selected Gilat’s SkyEdge II-c hub with X-Architecture and SkyEdge II-c small user terminals to power broadband services from EUTELSAT 36C from a hub installed at the Dubna satellite centre operated by RSCC, near Moscow.

Kirill Yanchenko, CEO of Eutelsat Networks, the Moscow-based subsidiary driving Eutelsat’s broadband strategy in Russia: “We are delighted to see the Ka-band payload on EUTELSAT 36C go live with TricolorTV, a longstanding Eutelsat customer that is already a leader in mass market satellite broadcasting. We believe this significant first step will facilitate wide adoption of satellite broadband in Russia.”

Alexey Karpov, Director of Sales and Customer Service at TricolorTV: “We are confident that this new service will deliver an excellent quality high-speed broadband service to our subscribers, particularly the many that are not well served by terrestrial infrastructure.”

In addition to collaborating on broadband deployment, Eutelsat and TricolorTV announced in July the launch in Russia of a multi-screen video delivery service using Eutelsat’s new ‘SmartBeam’ solution that receives high-quality TV channels and VOD content via satellite and serves it locally to mobile phones and tablets over a Wi-Fi network.

Russia’s Tricolor TV first to launch Eutelsat’s new ‘SmartBeam’ Multiscreen Video Delivery Service

New offer from Tricolor TV will enable viewers in public venues to watch Tricolor TV channels on mobile devices

Moscow, Paris, 27 July 2016 – Tricolor TV, operator of one of the world’s fastest-growing TV platforms, and Eutelsat Communications (NYSE Euronext Paris: ETL) announce they are collaborating on deploying the first network in Russia to use SmartBeam, Eutelsat’s new multi-screen video delivery solution.

SmartBeam opens the door to the deployment of the first satellite network in Russia to deliver video content to mobile devices. Consumers will be able to receive Tricolor TV’s new service in public venues by downloading a user-friendly app on their mobile devices (smartphones, tablets using Android or iOS). They will pick up the channels in high-quality via a local Wi-Fi network connected to a compact low-cost satellite box that will receive the content direct from a Eutelsat satellite at 36° East, Russia’s leading position for video content.

Leveraging the inherent strength of satellites for broadcasting, the service will provide universal and immediate coverage of wide regions of Russia with guaranteed quality of service. It will enable Tricolor TV to extend its relationship with users by delivering DRM protected content to public venues (hotels, shopping centres, airport lounges, medical centres…)with no dependency on terrestrial networks.

Rodolphe Belmer, CEO of Eutelsat, said: “Eutelsat’s satellites and technology are already the backbone of distribution networks for broadcasters and pay-TV platforms around the world. Now, with SmartBeam, we are leveraging multiscreen solutions to help broadcasters extend OTT services and offer the same experience to users located beyond range of terrestrial networks. SmartBeam will also be able to circumvent user frustration with buffering and disconnection as terrestrial mobile networks saturate. We are delighted that Tricolor TV, one of our most prominent pay-TV clients, has recognised the added value of SmartBeam as a new content delivery solution.”

Alexei Kholodov, CEO of Tricolor TV, said: “As a leader in digital television services Tricolor TV is committed to deploying cutting edge technologies and services that extend our zone of reception and enhance the viewing experience for our customers. As we wait for a plane to take off, or sit in a waiting room we have all thought at one time or another that being able to watch television would be a real benefit. Now, thanks to our partnership with Eutelsat, Tricolor TV is going beyond the four walls of user homes to reach viewers on their mobile devices in public venues.”

How does it work?

Based on standard technologies and protocols (DVB-S2, IP, HTTP Live Streaming…), SmartBeam is compatible with all common portable devices as well as Smart TVs. It uses a small, low-cost satellite receiver that acts as a local Content Delivery Network (CDN) receiving high-quality TV channels and VOD content via satellite, and serving it locally to mobile phones and tablets over a Wi-Fi network. It is also flexible enough to support advanced video services such as encryption with DRM (Digital Rights Management) and non-linear TV like Catch Up TV and Push VOD.

On the transmit side:

·         Native IP content is received at a satellite teleport.

·         The IP streams are converted from unicast to multicast then encapsulated over a DVB transport stream and broadcast via satellite in a standard DVB-S2 transmission platform.

On the receive side:

Content is received via a standard satellite dish connected to a compatible satellite receiver.

·         The receiver decodes the DVB-S2 transport stream, extracts the original IP packets and delivers them to smartphones, tablets or other IP native devices through a regular Wi-Fi access point or home router. Live content is served on-the-fly, while VOD content is stored and can be accessed at any time.

Soccer from space: Eutelsat and Rai broadcast first of seven Euro2016 matches in live Ultra HD

Viewers receiving Tivùsat platform offered first quarter final, between Poland and Portugal, in Ultra HD

Paris, Rome, 1 July 2016 – Yesterday’s first quarter-final of the Euro2016 marked the kick-off of seven matches that Rai, Italy’s national public broadcaster, and Eutelsat (NYSE Euronext Paris: ETL) are offering Italian TV homes. The initiative with Eutelsat marks Rai’s most ambitious foray into Ultra HD that represents the next big leap forward in broadcasting.

Unprecedented Ultra HD broadcasts delivered to Tivùsat homes by Eutelsat’s HOTBIRD satellites

Images of the match were filmed by 14 Ultra HD cameras located by UEFA at the Vélodrome Stadium in Marseilles and sent to the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) in Paris where they were forwarded to Eutelsat’s Paris-Rambouillet teleport. A temporary studio set up by Rai at the teleport added live commentary, after which the special Rai 4k channel was encrypted and uplinked to Eutelsat’s HOTBIRD satellites. Tivùsat homes equipped with an Ultra HD screen and a CAM certified by Tivùsat were able to watch the first quarter-final which will be followed on1, 2 and 3 July by the three other quarter finals, the semi-finals on 6 and 7 July and the final match on 10 July.

These live broadcasts of European Championship matches constitute Italy’s most significant broadcast of live sport in Ultra HD and prefigure the launch of regular channels. With the take-up of Ultra HD screens in Italy expected to hit one million units by end 2016, the market for higher resolution TV is rapidly taking shape.

The special broadcasts also involve the support of industry-leading technology partners, including DBW COMMUNICATION and V-Nova that is providing the P.Link 4K, a software-based contribution encoding and decoding system that can contribute the highest signal quality from the IBC.

Eutelsat First in the World to Achieve New Quality Certification From World Teleport Association (WTA)

WTA awards Tier 4 Certification to Eutelsat’s Paris-Rambouillet teleport

New York City, Paris, 23 June 2016 – The World Teleport Association (WTA) today announced that Eutelsat Communications (NYSE Euronext Paris: ETL) has achieved Full Tier 4 Certification for its Paris-Rambouillet teleport in France under WTA’s recently launched Teleport Certification Programme. Tier 4 is the highest of four quality tiers and the Paris-Rambouillet Teleport is the first in the world to achieve that level of Certification.

Foundation of quality of service

The Certification programme involves a rigorous assessment of teleport facilities, technology and operating procedures, which together form the foundation of quality of service. The programme begins when the teleport operator completes a +170-item questionnaire covering business continuity, transmission chains, satellite and terrestrial connectivity, safety, security including cybersecurity, and the network operations centre. Procedural questions examine satellite and terrestrial capacity management, service continuity, physical and cybersecurity processes, and change management.

WTA analysed the company’s completed questionnaire and issued a Provisional Certification in April. Eutelsat then hosted a 2-day site audit by a WTA-approved engineering consultant in May. The audit had three goals: to validate the self-reported information in the questionnaire, to note positive and negative variances, and to offer recommendations for improvements in facilities and procedures. The resulting Tier 4 Certification of Eutelsat’s Paris-Rambouillet Teleport will remain in effect for three years before re-certification is required.

José Sanchez, Eutelsat’s Director of Service Operations, said: “The achievement of the Tier-4 WTA certification represents new international recognition of Eutelsat’s customer service standards, complementing our ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certifications. To be awarded this highest level of certification shows the commitment of our teams to providing the highest quality of service to our customers and the remarkable performance of our facilities at the Paris-Rambouillet teleport in terms of infrastructure, security and operational procedures.”

“The success of our Certification programme depends on its adoption by teleport and satellite operators,” said WTA executive director Robert Bell. “It is their participation and support that translates a comprehensive quality programme like this one into a global standard, which in turn drives quality improvements that benefit customers around the world. In that context, Eutelsat’s Tier 4 Certification at its Paris-Rambouillet teleport is good news for the entire industry, and we are grateful for the leadership shown by Eutelsat.”

A new benchmark for teleport operators worldwide

WTA’s Teleport Certification Programme aims to serve both teleport operators and their customers by creating an objective, transparent, and internationally accepted method for teleport operators to document the quality of their operations for customers and strategic partners. It also aims to provide a means for customers to select teleport vendors delivering the price-performance level that is appropriate for their applications.
