SINGAPORE, 3 MAY 2017 – In 2008, stockbroker, investment advisor and financier Bernie Madoff made headlines around the world when he was arrested for perpetrating perhaps the largest financial fraud in U.S. history. Debuting same time as the U.S. on Sunday, May 21 at 8am (7am Thai.Jkt), with a same day primetime encore at 9pm (8pm Thai.Jkt), exclusively on HBO, the HBO Original Film THE WIZARD OF LIES examines Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme – his deception, lies and cover-up, all as the financier’s wife and sons are catapulted into a harsh and unrelenting spotlight. THE WIZARD OF LIES is directed by Barry Levinson from a script by Sam Levinson and John Burnham Schwartz and Samuel Baum, based on Diana B. Henriques’ 2011 New York Times bestselling book “The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust,” which featured unprecedented access and more than 100 interviews, including Madoff’s first interviews for publication since his arrest. “Truth and Consequences,” by Laurie Sandell, is additional source material.

The film also stars Alessandro Nivola (“American Hustle”) as Mark Madoff, Bernie and Ruth’s oldest son, and Nathan Darrow (“House of Cards”) as Andrew Madoff, their youngest son, both of whom worked with their father at his investment firm. Other cast members include: Kristen Connolly (“The Cabin in the Woods”) as Stephanie Madoff, Mark’s wife; Lily Rabe (“Pawn Sacrifice”) as Catherine Hooper, Andrew’s fiancée; and Hank Azaria (“Brockmire”) as Frank DiPascali, Bernie’s right-hand man in the Ponzi scheme. Diana B. Henriques, the first writer to visit Madoff in prison, plays herself.

Barry Levinson received a Best Director Oscar® for the multiple Academy Award®-winning “Rain Man,” and earned two Oscar® nominations as director and producer of “Bugsy,” as well as original screenplay Oscar® nominations for “Diner,” “…and Justice for All” and “Avalon.” He also executive produced and directed HBO Films’ “You Don’t Know Jack” and executive produced HBO Films’ “Phil Spector,” both of which earned him Emmy® nominations.

HBO Asia’s Game of Thrones a Pencil Microsculpture Exhibition’s Artist in Singapore to Demonstrate His Craft

New Season Of GAME OF THRONES Premieres Same Time As The U.S. On
Monday, July 17 at 9am (SIN) On HBO. Also Available Online On HBO GO.

SINGAPORE, APRIL 20, 2017 – Russian artist and sculptor of the GAME OF THRONES A Pencil Microsculpture Exhibition (#GOTPencilArt), Salavat Fidai, is in Singapore for a limited time to demonstrate his craft and promote the exhibition. The exhibition, exclusively in Singapore, is organised by HBO Asia (#HBOAsia) and K+ (#kplussg) and opens to public from 22 April to 4 June at K+ Curatorial Space at Scotts Square. Admission is free.

HBO Asia has commissioned Fidai to produce 16 themed sculptures from the HBO Original hit series, GAME OF THRONES (#GameofThrones), into the tips of fragile graphite pencils. The 16 pencils on display will include the microsculpture carvings of the Iron Throne, sigils from House Stark, House Targaryen, House Greyjoy, House Baratheon and House Lannister, as well as the Hand Of The King pin, Cersei’s new crown, Drogon the dragon, the Three Eyed Ravel, the Night’s King, a White Walker, the Titan of Braavos, the Weirwood tree, and two swords – Brienne of Tarth’s Oathkeeper and Jon Snow’s Long Claw.

Fidai is world-renowned as one of the leading experts in the field of miniature sculpture, creating intricate and detailed art on tips of pencils with diameters between 2mm to 5mm. Using an X-Acto knife, a microscope and an illuminated loupe, Salavat can take anywhere from 12 hours to 14 days for a microsculpture to be completed.

“The Iron Throne was definitely one of the most challenging one I’ve done,” says Fidai. “It took me almost two weeks to complete it as I had to make sure every intricate detail was accurately carved.”

He further adds, “I am a huge fan of GAME OF THRONES – I love how unpredictable the plot is, and I particularly love shows about war and knights. I was absolutely thrilled when HBO Asia approached me to work on some of the most recognisable icons from the hit series.”

“HBO Asia loves bringing innovative ways for new and existing fans to connect with the series. This collaboration with K+ and Salavat Fidai is really our way of letting fans see GAME OF THRONES from a new perspective,” says Magdalene Ew, HBO Asia’s Head of Marketing, Creative and Content.

“In the past, we have organised a Game of Thrones Mondo Art Exhibition as well as an interactive The Game of Thrones Experience: Worlds of Westeros Exhibition event which included the Game of Thrones: Ascend the Wall 4D virtual reality experience, actual weapons and original storyboards from the series, as well as a replica of the Iron Throne,” says Ew. “This time, in continuing our efforts to bring the hit series to fans in an experiential way, we went with an art form which juxtaposes the magnitude and enormousness of the series which is a worldwide phenomenon onto the tiny, delicate and intricate tips of pencils.”

Oprah Winfrey, Rose Byrne, Renée Elise Goldsberry Star in HBO Original Film the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Debuting April 23 Only on HBO GO, HBO on Demand & HBO

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Publicity images

SINGAPORE, APRIL 11, 2017 – In 1951, a vibrant African-American woman was dying of cervical cancer at age 31. Under the bright lights of an operating room, surgeons harvested cells from her tumor that would prove to be astonishingly immortal and would change the face of medicine forever. Yet she, and any recognition of her involuntary donation, would long remain unknown. HBO Original Film THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS premieres same time as the U.S. on Sunday April 23 at 8am (SIN) on HBO with a same day primetime encore at 10:50pm (SIN). Also available on HBO On Demand and HBO GO.

The story is told through the eyes of Henrietta’s daughter, Deborah Lacks (Oprah Winfrey) who is aided by journalist, Rebecca Skloot (Rose Byrne). Deborah sets out to learn about the mother she never knew and to understand how the unauthorized harvesting of Henrietta’s (Renée Elise Goldsberry) cancerous cells led to unprecedented medical breakthroughs, creating a medical revolution that changed countless lives. It’s a true story of medical arrogance and triumph, race, poverty and deep friendship between the unlikeliest of people.

The cast of THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS includes: Oprah Winfrey (as Deborah Lacks), Rose Byrne (as Rebecca Skloot), Renée Elise Goldsberry (as Henrietta Lacks), Reg E. Cathey (as Zakariyya), Rocky Carroll (as Sonny Lacks), Courtney B. Vance (as Sir Lord Keenan Kester Cofield), Ruben Santiago-Hudson (as Dr. Pattillo) and Leslie Uggams (as Sadie). Directed by George C. Wolfe from a screenplay by Peter Landesman and Alexander Woo and Wolfe, the film is based on the book by Rebecca Skloot. Alan Ball, Peter Macdissi, Oprah Winfrey, Carla Gardini and Lydia Dean Pilcher executive produce; Rebecca Skloot co-executive produces. Additional cast includes Reed Birney, Adriane Lenox, Roger Robinson and John Douglas Thomas.

ABOUT THE STORY

Henrietta Lacks grew up as a tobacco farmer from Virginia and, in 1951, was a married mother of five when she was diagnosed with cervical cancer at the age of 31. Under treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, tissue from her malignant tumor was removed without her knowledge or that of her family, as was standard practice of the day. Her tissue was given to Dr. George Gey, who, at Johns Hopkins, had been trying for nearly 30 years to grow an immortal cell line. Scientists around the world had been making similar efforts with cell lines for decades for human testing that was impossible to do on living human beings.

Up until this time, no one was able to grow human cells in the culture of a petri dish. However, Lacks’ cells, multiplying at a feverish pace and accelerating the deadly cancer inside her body, continued to grow, inexplicably – one might say, miraculously – and multiply outside her body in laboratory conditions. What started as a doctor’s curiosity led to the birth of the biomedical industry and the use of what was known as HeLa cells in tens of thousands of research studies over the years. From the development of drugs for polio, leukemia, influenza and Parkinson’s disease, to cloning and gene mapping, to their inclusion in the first space missions to study the impact of zero gravity on human cells, Lacks’ cells have been bought and sold by the billions and continue to exist and multiply today.

Science journalist Rebecca Skloot spent ten years researching the story behind the HeLa cells, trying to bring Lacks’ story to light. Her 2010 New York Times bestseller, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” not only explains the scientific background of Lacks’ story, but follows her efforts to win the trust of the Lacks family and join Henrietta’s daughter, Deborah, as they set out to discover the woman whose silent contribution changed the world.

ABOUT THE FILM

Multiple Tony Award winner, DGA winner and Emmy® nominee George C. Wolfe brings the book to the screen, based on an adaptation of the story.

“The book is massive,” explains Wolfe. “Massive emotionally, intellectually; it’s a science book and it’s an intimate book about families and race in America and economics and power. All these things are juggled in fascinating and interesting ways.”

Executive producer and star Oprah Winfrey became intrigued by the book before it was even published. Aware of the competitive bidding for the film rights while it was still in galley form, she called Rebecca Skloot to express her recognition of and appreciation for the ten years’ worth of determination it took for the young writer to get Henrietta Lacks’ story told.

Says Winfrey, “Had she not had the conviction to stay with the story, we still wouldn’t know about Henrietta; the world would not know about her story. Rebecca was able to put it within a context that the world could receive and understand, and now, we’ve taken it to the next level.”

Originally, Winfrey did not see herself participating in the project as an actor, because she couldn’t fully relate to the character of Henrietta’s daughter, Deborah. That changed when director Wolfe took a hand to the script.

For the screenplay, Wolfe decided to focus on Deborah Lacks’ determined quest to revisit her mother’s past, having lost her at age two, as well as her relationship with Rebecca Skloot, the eager young journalist who instigated her search.

Says Wolfe, “The story is about loss and identity, the power of knowing your own story and how it manifests itself inside of you. It’s about the desire to know so that you can be a more complete human being.”

“It wasn’t until I saw George’s breakdown of the script in such a way that I understood it was actually about a daughter in search of her mother,” explains Winfrey. “It’s about a daughter who is, really, in search of her mother’s love and connection in order to validate, verify and affirm for herself that she was loved. Knowing that part of the story is what allowed me to take it on.”

Several members of the Lacks family served as consultants on the film, including Henrietta Lacks’ children, Zakariyya Bari Abdul Rahman and David Lacks, Jr., and grandchildren, Jeri Lacks Whye, Alfred Carter, Jr. and La Tonya Carter.

THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS was filmed in and around Atlanta and in Baltimore, including an entrance to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where the real-life Henrietta Lacks entered and touched the foot of the huge religious statue in its atrium 65 years before.

The film’s talented crew includes: costume designer Paul Tazewell, casting director Cindy Tolan, music composer Branford Marsalis, editor Aaron Yanes, production designer Caroline Hanania and director of photography Sofian El Fani.

Written by Rebecca Skloot, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” was on the New York Times bestseller list for nearly six years and was the 2011 winner of the National Academies Communication Award for creative work that helps the public understanding of topics in science, engineering or medicine. Originally published by Crown Publishing in 2010, it has been translated into more than 25 foreign-language editions, has been added as an educational tool to school curriculums, and will be reissued in April in conjunction with the debut of the HBO Films drama.

NTV-PLUS achieves full coverage of Russian Federation with multi-year, multi-transponder contracts covering 140° East over Far East Russia and incremental capacity at 56° East over Siberia

Moscow, Paris, 3 April 2017
– NTV-PLUS, Russia’s original premium pay-TV platform, has consolidated its coverage across Siberia and extended broadcasting into the country’s Far East following the conclusion of contracts on two satellites with longstanding partner, Eutelsat Communications (NYSE Euronext: ETL).

With the launch of new services on 1 April, NTV-PLUS is achieving its objective of full coverage of the Russian Federation, enabling viewers across the country to benefit from the diversity and quality of digital TV. This new wave of expansion follows approvals earlier this year from Russia’s Federal Tender Commission for NTV-PLUS to extend its broadcasting footprint as far as the Pacific Coast.

NTV-PLUS has signed a multi-year, multi-transponder contract with Eutelsat covering the Express-AT2 satellite at 140 degrees East to reach homes in Far East Russia and incremental capacity on the Express-AT1 satellite at 56 degrees East to consolidate its coverage of Siberia. Launched with Eutelsat over 20 years ago, NTV-PLUS today offers subscribers more than 240 special-interest channels including a growing stable of High Definition content. Its offer includes 42 channels produced by Gazprom Media with a strong focus on exclusive premium sport across 11 channels.

Mikhail Demin, CEO of NTV-PLUS, said: “Our mutual goal is to establish highest standards of modern satellite TV. Today NTV Plus covers 100% of the Russian territory with more than 145 million population. For us this expansion is not only business ambition but also is a great social mission which we are honored to implement with our partner Eutelsat”.

Rodolphe Belmer, Eutelsat CEO, added: “We are delighted to pursue more than two decades of collaboration with NTV-PLUS and to see the unique value of satellites for delivering nationwide coverage of the Russian Federation in order to offer digital TV to all homes irrespective of their location.”
