The network’s first Mandarin Original series, THE TEENAGE PSYHIC (通靈少女), received 2 nominations and their very first returnable series, HALFWORLDS Season Two, received 1 nomination. The categories are:

Best Cinematography for THE TEENAGE PSYCHIC (通靈少女)
Best Cinematography for HALFWORLDS Season Two

THE TEENAGE PSYCHIC (通靈少女) was HBO Asia’s first Chinese language six-part, hour-long series that premiered in April this year and received positive ratings throughout its broadcast. The series also recently clinched the coveted Best Mini-Series (TV Movie) award and Best Supporting Actress for Nana Lee (李千娜) award at Taiwan’s 52nd Annual Golden Bell Awards 2017. This coming-of-age story revolves around a 16-year-old girl who just wants to lead a typical teenage high school life. Born with the ability to see spirits, her life will never be normal. She must juggle the pressures of teenage life – first love, academic success and peer pressure – with the demands of the spirit world. THE TEENAGE PSYCHIC (通靈少女) was HBO Asia’s first production set and filmed fully on-location in Taiwan and directed by 29-year-old rising Taiwanese writer-director, Chen Ho-Yu (陳和榆). The series was jointly developed with Taiwanese broadcaster, Public Television Service (PTS), and award-winning Singaporean production company, InFocus Asia (IFA).

Premiered in January this year, the eight-part, hour-long dark action fantasy drama, HALFWORLDS Season Two, marked HBO Asia’s very first returnable series. The series also took home 5 awards at the Apollo Awards 2017 including Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound Design and Best Music Composition. Helmed by Thai filmmaker Ekachai Uekrongtham (Beautiful Boxer, Skin Trade), the series widens the universe established in the first season. Shifting from the back alleys of Jakarta, to the neon streets of Bangkok, a tenacious researcher named Juliet is trying to uncover the secret world of demons that live amongst us, while looking for an ancient artefact of great power. An ensemble cast of actors from Thailand, Indonesia, The Philippines and Taiwan star.

In 2017, HBO Asia also premiered 2 other Asian Original productions including SENT, the network’s first comedy drama series that premiered in September and THE TALWARS: BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, HBO Asia’s first original documentary series that will premiere later this month. Since 2012, HBO Asia has produced ten Asian Originals to date with more slated to premiere in the coming years. Other HBO Asia Original productions that were recognized at the Asian Television Awards include SERANGOON ROAD, GRACE and HALFWORLDS Season One.

SINGAPORE, OCTOBER 30, 2017 – HBO Asia’s first original documentary, THE TALWARS: BEHIND CLOSED DOORS is a gripping documentary that examines the double murder of a teenage girl and her family’s household servant in Noida, India, that quickly became one of India’s biggest murder mysteries, capturing worldwide attention. Produced in association with Star India, the four-part hour-long HBO Asia Original Documentary Series premieres on Sunday, November 26 at 9pm (SIN) exclusively on HBO. Parts 2, 3 and 4 will debut on subsequent Sundays at the same time. The documentary will be streaming on HBO GO and will also available on HBO On Demand.

The documentary begins with Drs. Rajesh and Nupur Talwar on the morning of 16 May 2008, discovering their daughter, Aarushi Talwar, lying dead in her bed, bludgeoned and with her throat cut. Their Nepali servant, Hemraj Banjade, is missing and believed to be the culprit until his bloated and battered body is discovered on the apartment roof terrace. There were seemingly just the four people in the apartment that night and only two of them are still alive. To the police investigation teams leading the inquiry, the parents must be the murderers, but after nine years, three investigations, a trial and appeal, and now an acquittal, nothing is as it seems. In English and Hindi with English and local language subtitles*, the documentary features never-before-seen exclusive interviews with Aarushi’s parents, THE TALWARS: BEHIND CLOSED DOORS speaks with those most closely involved in this twisted tale of intrigue, mystery that has turned this double murder into one of India’s most notorious crimes.

Mr. Jonathan Spink, CEO of HBO Asia, says, “THE TALWARS: BEHIND CLOSED DOORS marks HBO Asia’s first original documentary, adding to our ever-expanding repertoire of HBO Asia Original productions which includes series and movies. With this documentary, HBO Asia continues to showcase interesting and relevant stories from around the region that resonates strongly with the Asian audience.”

Episodes Include:
Part 1
Debut: Sunday, November 26 at 9pm (SIN) on HBO

After the brutal murder of their teenage daughter, Aarushi, hopes of swift justice crumble for the Talwars as the prime suspect, the family servant, is found dead and decomposing on the roof terrace of the family home. Under intense media scrutiny, the local police scramble to find the culprit quickly, leading them to arrest the grieving father.

Part 2
Debut: Sunday, December 3 at 9pm (SIN) on HBO

What appears to be a botched local police investigation into the double murder, forces authorities to quickly replace the police with India’s elite investigative unit – the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI clears the father of killing his daughter and servant as the investigation’s focus swings to nearby servants and staff, escalating social and class tensions.

Part 3
Debut: Sunday, December 10 at 9pm (SIN) on HBO

A new officer reinvigorates the stalled CBI investigation, switching track and pursuing both parents. Despite little hard evidence and increasingly desperate legal battles, Drs. Nupur and Rajesh Talwar eventually find themselves in the dock charged with murdering their own daughter and servant.

Part 4
Debut: Sunday, December 17 at 9pm (SIN) on HBO

After more than nine years and three investigations, this is a case that still haunts India. As the parents win their appeal, the case is reassessed and troubling questions emerge over what really happened the night Aarushi and Hemraj died.

THE TALWARS: BEHIND CLOSED DOORS is HBO Asia’s fourth Original production this year following the second season of HALFWORLDS, the dark action fantasy drama series set in Bangkok which premiered in January, the award-winning THE TEENAGE PSYCHIC, HBO Asia’s first original Chinese series set in Taiwan that premiered with breakthrough ratings in April, and SENT, HBO Asia’s first comedy drama series that premiered in September. To date, HBO Asia has produced ten Asian Originals with more slated to premiere in the coming years.

New episodes from the four-part hour-long series will premiere on subsequent Sundays at the same time. The documentary will be streaming on HBO GO and will also available on HBO On Demand.

BECOMING WARREN BUFFETT: Candid documentary chronicling the life of the billionaire investor premieres August 13 on HBO SIGNATURE

SINGAPORE, AUGUST 4, 2017 – With a net worth of more than US$60 billion, Warren Buffett is truly a one-of-a-kind billionaire. Now 86, the legendary investor still lives in a modest home in Omaha, and continues to drive himself to the office every morning to manage Berkshire Hathaway, the fourth-largest public company in the world. But more surprising than his humble lifestyle and self-effacing personality are Buffett’s moral integrity and unique mind, which drove him not only to become the most successful businessman in the world, but also an unparalleled philanthropist.

With unprecedented access to his day-to-day personal life, BECOMING WARREN BUFFETT tells the improbable story of how an ambitious, numbers-obsessed boy from Nebraska became one of the richest, most-respected men in the world. The definitive documentary on Buffett, this candid portrait sheds new light on a man who has helped shape the way Americans view capitalism and, more recently, philanthropy. Told primarily in Buffett’s own words, the film features never-before-released home videos, family photographs, archival footage and interviews with family and friends. This HBO Original Documentary Film premieres Sunday, August 13 at 10pm (SIN) on HBO SIGNATURE and will also stream on HBO GO.

Tracing Warren Buffett’s ascent from first-time investor to business maven, the documentary delves into the highs and lows of his career and personal life, from becoming a father of three and the world’s richest businessman, to weathering the Salomon Brothers treasury bond trading scandal, which threatened his sterling reputation, and the loss of his wife and first love, Susie Thompson Buffett.

“I like numbers,” Buffet tells a group of Omaha Central High School students. “It started before I can remember.” A voracious reader, the seven-year-old read the library book “One Thousand Ways to Make $1000,” and made extra cash selling Coca-Cola, gum and newspapers as a youth. His father, a salesman who survived the Depression, was elected to Congress when Warren was 12, moving the family to Washington. Displaced and unhappy, Warren lost interest in academics and faltered, despite his love of learning and competitive spirit.

After attending the University of Nebraska at his father’s insistence, he interviewed for Harvard Business School and was turned down. The rejection was propitious: Buffett discovered that two of his financial idols, Ben Graham and David Dodd, taught at Columbia, and after writing them a letter, was accepted there. From Graham he learned the “two rules of investing”: “Rule #1: Never lose money. Rule #2: Never forget Rule #1.”

Buffett, along with partner Charlie Munger, would build his fortune at Berkshire Hathaway, a struggling textile company that he turned into a behemoth holding corporation with stakes in Coke, Heinz, Geico and other blue-chip companies.

Buffett’s exemplary moral principles and passion are at the heart of his success. “He truly loves to do what he does,” says former Fortune editor Carol Loomis. After the death of Susie, whom Buffett credits with raising their children, as well as making him appreciate civil rights and philanthropy, he emerged from a period of mourning in 2006 to announce that most of his fortune would be given to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, an unprecedented act of philanthropy.

Though his accomplishments attest to his excellence, Buffett contends that he “won the ovarian lottery” by being born who he was, when he was and where he was. “For over 60 years, I’ve been able to tap dance to work, doing what I love doing,” he tells the Omaha Central High School students. “I just feel very, very lucky.”

Kunhardt Films’ HBO credits include the Emmy®-nominated “Nixon by Nixon: In His Own Words,” the Emmy®-nominated “Gloria: In Her Own Words,” the Emmy®-winning “Teddy: In His Own Words” and this year’s Emmy®-winning “Jim: The James Foley Story.”

A co-production of HBO and Kunhardt Films, BECOMING WARREN BUFFETT is directed by Peter Kunhardt and produced by Teddy Kunhardt and George Kunhardt. For HBO: senior producer Jacqueline Glover; executive producer Sheila Nevins.

Armenia’s first all-HD pay-TV offer available from 15 July to homes in Europe, Middle East and European parts of Russian Federation

Paris, Yerevan, 12 July 2017 – SHANT TV, the Armenian commercial broadcaster, today announced that 15 July marks the launch of its new international multi-channel platform from the popular HOTBIRD video neighbourhood operated by Eutelsat Communications (Euronext Paris: ETL). SHANT TV has signed a multi-year contract with Eutelsat to support its new all-HD venture.

Broadcasting through HOTBIRD for almost ten years, SHANT TV is scaling up to a multi-channel pay-TV offer for Armenian-speaking viewers in HOTBIRD’s vast footprint that takes in Europe, the Middle East and the European part of the Russian Federation. Available exclusively in High Definition for a minimum subscription of €5 a month, the platform will feature SHANT Premium, Armenia Premium and SHANT Music. It will be available Direct-to-Home for households equipped with a dish and box as well as through cable and IP networks.

The Armenian community, representing more than four million people within the HOTBIRD footprint, will be able to benefit, in superior image quality, from a programme offering comprising series, films, music videos and adaptations of popular franchises, including X-Factor and Who wants to be a Millionaire?

Arthur Yezekyan, President and founder of SHANT TV LLC, said: “We know already from the results of our survey that 50% of the audience of SHANT Premium outside Armenia watches our channel from Eutelsat’s HOTBIRD position. This was decisive in our choice of HOTBIRD for distributing our new offer. Our thanks go to Eutelsat for their highly valuable support and consultancy, especially for technical and marketing activities.”

Michel Azibert, Eutelsat’s Commercial and Development Director, said: “The exceptionally broad coverage of HOTBIRD and an offer of 1,000 channels in 30 languages make it the point of reference for broadcasters seeking to reach dispersed communities. We are delighted to support SHANT TV’s effort to leverage HOTBIRD’s unique strengths to reach Armenian viewers across multiple countries. The transition from Standard Broadcasting of a single channel to a multi-channel HD platform also demonstrates the accelerating trend towards High Definition. Nowhere is this more apparent than at our HOTBIRD that already hosts 280 HD channels.”

SINGAPORE, JUNE 19, 2017 – In 1982, during a dark and fictitious time in cycling history, the sport’s most venerable, time-honored race was marred by the doping of virtually all of its competitors. Riddled with nefarious characters, that year’s competition was a hornet’s nest of moral depravity. Through the perspective of five riders, TOUR DE PHARMACY gives an inside look into the grim realities of the darkest event in a sport notoriously tainted by controversy.

Starring and executive produced by Andy Samberg (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”; HBO’s “7 Days In Hell”), and written and executive produced by Murray Miller (“King of the Hill”; HBO’s “Girls”), this fictional, none-too-serious look at that sordid event debuts Sunday, July 9 at 10pm (SIN), exclusively on HBO. The special will also be streaming on HBO GO.

Among the notables making appearances in TOUR DE PHARMACY are: John Cena, Daveed Diggs, Orlando Bloom, Freddie Highmore, Jeff Goldblum, Danny Glover, Julia Ormond, Dolph Lundgren, James Marsden, Kevin Bacon, Nathan Fielder, Will Forte, Maya Rudolph, Joe Buck, Mike Tyson, J.J. Abrams, Phylicia Rashad, Chris Webber, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Lance Armstrong.

TOUR DE PHARMACY marks Samberg and Miller’s second collaboration for HBO under their Legends of Sport banner, following the 2015 mockumentary “7 Days In Hell,” which was called a “bawdy, outlandish skewering of tennis” by the New York Times, and “strange and splendid” by the Los Angeles Times.

The special is helmed by returning director Jake Szymanski; written by Murray Miller; executive producers, Andy Samberg, Murray Miller, David Bernad; produced by M. Elizabeth Hughes; co-executive producer, Jake Szymanski.

HBO ASIA APPOINTS JESSICA KAM AS SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR HBO ASIA ORIGINAL PRODUCTIONS

HBO Asia - Jessica Kam

SINGAPORE, 15 JUNE 2017 – HBO Asia is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Jessica Kam (甘蕙茵) as their new Senior Vice President for HBO Asia Original Productions where she will be responsible for all aspects of the network’s productions of all HBO Asia Originals. A senior TV executive and film producer with over twenty years of experience in film, TV, music, news and digital media, Jessica brings with her a wealth of media experience that spans across three continents and joins HBO Asia with a deep understanding of the industry in Asia.

“We welcome Jessica into our HBO family and trust that she will elevate our offerings and presence here in Asia through the creation of more Asian content,” says Jonathan Spink, CEO of HBO Asia. He further adds, “HBO Asia was one of the first in the region to produce Asian Original content and there has been a growing interest in Asian productions which is encouraging for us as we ramp up HBO Asia Original productions under Jessica’s leadership and wealth of experience in the region – creating content for viewers not only in Asia, but also across the globe.”

Jessica’s appointment follows HBO’s growing position and commitment to produce more original content for Asia. As early as 2012, HBO Asia started producing its Original productions with the action horror film, Dead Mine. Since then, HBO Asia’s repertoire of Asian Original productions have captured the attention of Asian audiences and received acclaim from the industry, evidenced by the accolades it has won and been nominated for prestigious awards internationally.

Over the years, the network’s Originals have grown from strength to strength, attracting potential partnerships and collaborations within the region to create quality content. To date, HBO Asia has produced eight Asian Originals with more slated to premiere later this year. The network’s most recent Asian Original series, The Teenage Psychic, was HBO Asia’s first Mandarin Original series. It received positive feedback and the highest premiere average rating of all HBO Asia Original series in Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan.

Jessica’s understanding of the movie and entertainment industry in Asia stems from her experience in producing 10 feature films in China to date. Some of her notable film credits include the award-winning Chinese feature film The Piano in a Factory (钢的琴) that has received over a dozen international awards, commercial releases such as Kungfu Cyborg (机器侠), Just Another Pandora’s Box (越光宝盒), Bump in the Road (一路顺疯), as well as the upcoming 10-ton Killer (十吨刺客) and East Sea Odyssey (大闹东海). In 2016, she produced two critically-acclaimed films including the Hong Kong documentary She Objects (她非它) and the first official Italian-Chinese co-production Coffee.

Before working as a film producer in China, Jessica had stints with various regional media companies. From 2005 to 2008, Jessica oversaw Celestial Pictures’ marketing and product management teams to drive the distribution of its Shaw Brothers library titles, new films and TV channels. In 1999-2005, she served MTV Asia as head of the MTV China Channel and VP of Network Communications. Prior to MTV, she has also worked for MGM Gold, Dow Jones Newswires and Disney Studios.

Jessica holds an MBA from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, as well as a B.A. in Computer Science from U. C. Berkeley, USA. She was the President of the International Advertising Association (IAA), Hong Kong Chapter (2001-2005).
