SmarTone first to trial Ericsson’s unique Targeted App Experience

ericsson123Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) today announced the completion of a trial of Targeted App Experience together with operator SmarTone, Hong Kong. App experience has become a key differentiator among mobile broadband operators. These days users care a great deal about time-to-content and smooth video playout – no longer only about dropped voice calls. The trial results show that app experience is impacted even at medium traffic loads, and that load levels in a radio cell often vary greatly over just a few milliseconds.

Stephen Chau, Chief Technology Officer of SmarTone, says: “The trial has proven that Ericsson’s Targeted App Experience significantly reduces time-to-content so that web page download becomes faster. At the same time it also ensures a great level of consistency in user experience independent of traffic load.”

Ericsson’s Targeted App Experience becomes available with the previously announced Ericsson Network Software 15B release featured at MWC 2015 in Barcelona. It builds on technology that has been standardized by 3GPP, and connects the LTE / 3G shared radio channel scheduler to the operator’s policy control system. This enables mobile operators to provide great app experience for targeted content while at same time maximizing the utilization of their spectrum assets.

Thomas Noren, Vice President and Head of Radio Product Management, Ericsson says “We are proud to be able to work together with SmarTone in trialing our latest technology. SmarTone sets high demands on superior network performance and has a strong focus on user experience. With our new Targeted App Experience we leverage our strength as a provider of end-to-end solutions. The unique solution combines software features across our market leading product portfolio spanning across LTE and 3G radio access, Evolved Packet Core, and Policy and Charging Control.”

In addition to Targeted App Experience, Ericsson recently launched the complementary App Experience Optimization service.

SES: Satellite plays key role in future networks

ses123Barcelona, 2 March 2015 – Satellite has a key role to play in the architecture of future networks and the acceleration of digitization. This was one of the main conclusions of a keynote that Karim Michel Sabbagh, President and CEO of SES, delivered today at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. “Satellite is a key actor for digitization and an integral part of the mobile ecosystem, adding reach and efficiency to mobile network operations,” Sabbagh said at the conference. “Only combining terrestrial and satellite infrastructures and technologies will lead to significant cost efficiencies, competitive solutions and compelling consumer advantages.”

Referring to the expected exponential increase in video traffic in all networks, further driven by the introduction of Ultra High Definition (HD) TV, Sabbagh said: “Mobile players are facing enormous challenges and the risk that the evolution of network demand and usage lead to an unmanageable congestion, if we do not call for a mainstream integration of cellular and satellite infrastructures. Only by joining forces, both industries can develop converging ecosystems and hence maximize public and private benefits.”

Sabbagh underlined the urgency of such an overarching, “hybrid collaboration”: “If for example today’s video content was to be consumed fully on demand and only by terrestrial fixed network in Europe, data consumption per household would multiply by a factor of not less than 35; with Ultra HD, this would again multiply by 3 or 4.” Every monolithic approach to technology would therefore risk falling short of the enormous challenges ahead, he warned. “If we fail, the overwhelming demand for video content and streaming will even deepen the digital gap further.”

Integrating digital infrastructures and combining the strengths of broadcast and broadband technologies, on the contrary, would create a unique combination, Sabbagh concluded. “Where terrestrial networks deliver connectivity, on the one side, and satellites deliver the mass market distribution of IP video and non-video content to homes, on the other, we can offload heavy video traffic from terrestrial networks. This will help all of us control costs, add reach and create truly converged ecosystems that will help us to drive the demand for further and future consumer applications and solutions.”

Multiple 4K HEVC 60p LIVE Over DVB-S2X & DVB-T2 at ABU-DBS 2015

MEASAT-use-this-123-20141128Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 02 March 2015 – A live demonstration of a unique satellite (DVBS2X)
and terrestrial (DVB-T2) hybrid 4K 60p transmission system is in the works for the
upcoming ABU DBS (Digital Broadcasting Symposium) 2015 Exhibition in Hotel Istana, Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia.

Village Island and Aviindos, in partnership with MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn. Bhd.
(“MEASAT”) are again pushing the limits of broadcasting standards to provide enhanced levels
of quality for end users. With the new DVB-S2X capabilities, the companies will transmit via
satellite two (2) 4K video (‘Ultra HD’) services at 60 progressive frames per second.

“It was extremely challenging to confirm all elements of the system were able to perform fully at
their maximum capacity in order to achieve what we had targeted” said Jonathan Triboulet,
Director of Village Island Singapore regional office. “Without the complete dedication of all
partners, this demonstration would never have been possible”.

The satellite transmission from MEASAT will be received via a 3m mesh-type receive antenna
to be installed by Total Communication Sdn. Bhd. on the rooftop of Hotel Istana. Village Island
and Aviindos will then redistribute the services in DVB-T2 as part of the live demonstration
during the exhibition.

“MEASAT is excited to be part of another innovative technical demonstration that presents an
enhanced broadcasting solution to our customers,” said Jarod Lopez, Vice President –
Broadcast Sales, MEASAT. “Customers using this solution will have greater bandwidth
efficiency to launch and distribute 4K channels on MEASAT’s satellites.”

All of the equipment required for the demonstration will be installed one day before the event. “As the local partner in Malaysia, we had the final responsibility to have the system running. The Sencore SMD989 support for DVB-S2X features out of the box, as well as Village Island’s VH-
4000 decoder with built-in 4K60p 10bits capability, enabled us to deploy the solution in only a few days” says Naveendran Murthy, CEO of Aviindos.

This year’s demonstration is a continuation of the project showcased at ABU 2014, in which
Village Island and Aviindos first developed with MEASAT the ability to broadcast multiple 4K
services over a satellite transponder.

About Aviindos
